Details leading up to the crime were revealed during the trial process
The Kyoto animation arson and murder case claimed 36 victims, the highest number of victims since the Heisei era. The jury trial of Shinji Aoba, 45, concluded on December 7 after an unusually long 22 sessions.

Aoba's motive for committing the crime had been "that his novel had been taken down by KyoAni," but in fact, during the course of the trial, details leading up to the crime that had not been reported before were revealed. The crux of the matter was his "delusional love affair" with a female director," said a reporter from the Social Affairs Department.

What exactly was this love affair? Let's take a look back at Aoba's testimony in court.

After leaving a vocational school, Aoba worked at a convenience store for about eight years, but resigned because of a bad relationship. His temporary job did not last long, and his electricity and gas were cut off. In 2006, he was arrested and given a suspended sentence.
