ギガントピテクスは体重２００～３００キロ・グラムに達する史上最大の類人猿。約２００万年前から生息し、外敵に滅ぼされたとする説もあったが、絶滅の理由や時期は分かっていなかった。
研究チームは、歯の化石や花粉のデータから、当時の自然環境などを調査。その結果、２３０万～７０万年前は餌が手に入りやすい森林が広がっていたが、気候変動で餌が減り、２９万５０００年～２１万５０００年前に絶滅したと判断した。
中国科学院研究員の張穎奇（ジャンインチー）さんによると、ギガントピテクスは果物や花といった好きな餌が減り、栄養価の低い木の皮や枝を食べるようになったという。
